While writing the job description for the 2014 intake of our Technical Training Program, I found myself reflecting back on my own experiences as a newbie in the events industry. I was fresh out of high school, a bit shy, a bit nerdy, and had a huge appetite for learning all things technical!
Well a lot has changed for me over the last 20 years. I now have a wealth of experience under my “tool” belt, which has turned that young school boy into a confident event professional, who still has a huge appetite for learning.
There really was no ’technical events‘ course offered by Uni or TAFE back then which could prepare me for life in the dynamic world of the events industry. My first role with Staging Connections was as a Trainee and the bulk of my learning was provided on-the-job by my patient and dedicated colleagues who shared their time and knowledge with me. This learning was reinforced by reading equipment user manuals as well as reflecting on my good and bad experiences from every event.
Fast forward to today and there are a wide range of courses, technologies and mediums for new entrants to learn the skills and knowledge required to achieve successful employment in the events industry. However, after all these years, I still believe on-the-job learning under the supervision of an experienced colleague is still the most effective way of developing and nurturing future event professionals.
So back to the job advertisement, where I find myself searching for the next generation of technical event professionals. I am proud that Staging Connections offers a learning program based on a nationally recognised qualification, which is delivered and assessed by industry experts, underpinned by crucial on-the-job learning, with the financial benefits of fulltime employment.
Staging Connections invested in a dedicated training department way back in 1998, and since then this team has grown to become an RTO in 2004, delivering the nationally accredited Certificate III in Live Production, Theatre and Events qualification. Over the years hundreds of young Trainees have started their careers through our training programs at Staging Connections, and many of whom are still employed with us today in a variety of roles across the business. The programme has also been a finalist in both the 2012 and 2013 Australian Event Awards due to the impact and contribution it has had to the events industry.
2014 is set to be another great year for training at Staging Connections, with our Trainees experiencing the latest in event technologies, receiving inspirational guidance from industry experts, and that crucial ingredient of on-the-job learning under the supervision of an experienced colleague.
