This week our blog is written by Tim Chapman, Staging Connections General Manager of Digital Event Services. Tim is a recent edition to the team, where his new role is working towards growing Staging Connections digital event components. Tim comes from a background in corporate events where he has pioneered large scale video conferencing projects and global webcasting of major events.
If you’ve been around as long as I have you may remember back to the days when the internet was only available on dial up and really wasn’t capable of delivering much more than a few web pages. The sweet sound of those beeps meant you were online and could start exploring. The experience was a pretty lonely one - except for email you didn’t really interact with anyone else. There was no such thing as social media and you couldn’t really talk to people over the internet through things like skype. You still picked up the phone for that or arranged a time to meet face to face. Things have moved on a little from then and technology like webcasting, means constraints like geography and time are no longer an issue. You can now deliver your message to anyone at any time anywhere in the world.
Take for instance a recent event we were involved in at Town Hall Sydney. The NSW Teachers Federation needed to speak to all of its members - and fast. They needed to outline the case put forward to the NSW Government before deciding on further political and industrial action. Everyone needed to hear their message and needed to be able to vote on the outcome before they could take any actions.
We were privileged enough to provide the crucial link in the form of a webcast that connected over 50 000 teachers across New South Wales with their counterparts at the NSW Teachers Federation Stop Work Meeting. I was there with a Staging Connections’ team of 19 capturing the entire event and webcasting it live to over 30 regional sites. Teachers throughout NSW met in RSL Clubs, town halls and other meeting areas to join their colleagues via live video feed. Can you imagine the work involved in trying to bring them all into the same room any other way?
There were five cameras capturing all the action including speeches from the President of the NSW Teachers Federation, Maurie Mulheron and members of the educational community. Our team controlled live crosses to audience members for reactions on what was being said by all speakers. Camera runs up to one hundred and fifty metres throughout the Town Hall captured all the action.
The live video stream was such that even those smaller towns with limited internet connection could receive the best available quality of delivery while other locations watch in HD via adaptive bit rate technology.
Here we are only really 10 or so years since those wonderful beeps let you know you were online and look were we have got to! Webcasting allows you to connect directly to a new, virtual audience. Taking you from stage to screen - all by simply harnessing the power of the internet. It got me thinking – what’s next? I can’t wait to find out!
